A device for securing a mat to a floor covering of a motor vehicle or the like comprising a securing part to be anchored in said floor covering as well as a part present in a recess in the mat, to which the securing part can be detachably fixed. The securing part comprises at least two legs, which are capable of pivoting movement with respect to each other. At least one tooth-shaped or needle-shaped anchoring part projects from a leg. The distance of an anchoring part to the pivot pin or to the pivoting centre in one extreme pivoted position of the securing part is about equal to the corresponding distance in the other extreme pivoted position. A cover part can be mounted on the securing part in a recess in the mat, in such a manner that the cover part secures the mat in an immovable position with respect to the securing part.
