PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain hydride of lithiated nickel dioxide capable of giving a cathode active material having large reversible capacity. SOLUTION: The hydride of lithiated nickel dioxide contains a nickel compound selected from nickel oxide, nickel hydroxide and the mixture and is obtained by forming a substantially homogeneous dry intermediate mixture of a starting material containing nickel oxide, nickel hydroxide or mixtures thereof, and optionally including one or more oxides or hydroxides of a transition metal selected from cobalt, iron, titanium, manganese, chromium and vanadium with about a 25% stoichiometrically excess lithium hydroxide. The mixture is heat treated at a temperature higher than about 600 deg.C under an atmosphere having a steam partial pressure higher than about 2 Torr. An electrochemical battery using the hydrate as the cathode active material is disclosed. |
