The safety system includes an airbag(14) which in its non-activated state is accommodated in the headrest(5) of the seat(2). The airbag consists of at least two interconnected sections(15,16) which are inflated consecutively during a corresponding deceleration of the vehicle in the direction of travel to protect different parts of the occupant's body. The airbag sections are separated from each other by a tearable connecting wall(17) which ruptures after air pressure has built up in the first section to allow air pressure to fill the second section.
