A froth activator (101) is provided for use in connection with a fractionation tray (110). The device may be used within a fractionation column during a fluid separation or distillation process. The froth activator (101) includes a vertical deflector (140) and extends from a fractionation tray deck (110). A horizontal activator surface (145) extends from the deflector (140), above the fractionation tray deck (110), and is connected to the tray deck by a descending wall portion (135). The activator surface (145) has a plurality of openings, corresponding to openings in the fractionation tray deck (110), to allow the passage of upwardly-flowing gases to initiate bubbling in the process liquid flow so as to maintain a more constant state of froth activity over the entire active region of the fractionation tray.
