PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally control reproducing power of light beams at all times in the case of reproducing the data recorded on a magneto-optical recording medium in which a high density recording is made possible. SOLUTION: A clock signal CLK2 provides timings including a standard level portion, portion immediately prior to the rising edge of reproduced signals, and the timing between the rising edge to a falling edge of the reproduced signals. Reproduced signals RF (the level values of the reproduced signals), which are digitized by an A/D converting section 215, are shifted by the timings of the signals CLK2 and stored in shift registers 216, 217 and 218. By using the level values of the reproduced signals RF stored in the registers 216, 217 and 218, distortion amplitude levels of the reproduced signals and amplitude levels of the reproduced signals are computed in an amplitude level computing section 220. By employing the computational results, reproduced power error signals ER are formed in a reproduced power error signal forming section 222.
