PURPOSE: A method for controlling an overflow of ATM cells is provided to efficiently control a cell overflow generated within a limited FIFO size in case that cells burst from the bottom of an ATM layer or a relevant channel's TXCLAV signal is not outputted due to a wrong operation at a physical layer. CONSTITUTION: A PGA(Programmable Gate Array) logic monitors the state of the FIFO of a physical layer through an up/down counter in an ATM layer(ST21) and grasps the amount of cells in the FIFO(ST22). The PGA logic judges whether the amount of cells in the FIFO is larger than a preset reference value(ST23). If the amount of cells in the FIFO is larger than the preset reference value, the PGA logic decreases polling timing and takes out cells quickly from the FIFO(ST24). However, in case that the amount of cells in the FIFO is not larger than the preset reference value, the PGA logic increases polling timing and takes out cells slowly from the FIFO(ST25).
