PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a magnets-optical disk from starting rotation while the magnetic head is held in contact with the magneto-optical disk and to prevent the damage of the magnetic head and the magneto-optical disk by detecting the state of the magnetic head when a power source switch is turned on and displacing the magnetic head to a recording inoperative position when the magnetic head is judged to exist in a recording operative position where the magnetic head comes into contact with the magneto-optical disk. SOLUTION: The state of the magnetic head is detected when the power source switch is turned on and when the magnetic head is judged to exist in the recording operative position where the magnetic head comes into contact with the magneto-optical disk, the magnetic head is displaced from the recording operative position to the recording inoperative position where the magnetic head does not come into contact with the magneto-optical disk.
