PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method of a membrane module, which can recover the treatment efficiency of the membrane module. SOLUTION: This cleaning method is a method for cleaning a membrane module 3a which obtains a concentrate and a permeate from a liquid to be treated by the cross flow membrane separation of the liquid to be treated. The cleaning method comprises a cleaning liquid supply process for supplying a cleaning liquid to the permeate side 3b of the membrane module 3 so that pressure exceeds the internal pressure of the side 3a of the liquid to be treated, and a flow velocity fluctuation process for fluctuating the flow velocity of the liquid to be treated in the membrane module 3.
