PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for allowing rapid and automatic thermal disconnection and connection between a cryocooler and a cold mass. SOLUTION: In a device and method for automatically disconnecting the cryocooler 74 of an MR system from a cold mass reservoir 72, a cryocooler thermal link 76 includes a first end plate 84 configured to be thermally connected to the cryocooler 74, and a second end plate 88 configured to be thermally connected to the cold mass 72. A space 80 between the first and second end plates 84, 88 is surrounded by a wall comprising a first end 82 mounted to the first end plate 84 and a second end 86 mounted to the second end plate 88.
