There is provided an organic EL element (30) including an anode (31), a cathode (32), and an organic layer (33), wherein the cathode (32) includes a protective conductor layer (32b) which faces the organic layer (33), a main conductor layer (32a) which is interposed between the protective conductor layer (32b) and the organic layer (33), and a barrier layer (32d) which is interposed between the protective conductor layer (32b) and the main conductor layer (32a) and made of an insulator or a semiconductor.
