Provided is a technology of easily forming a substrate exposing section selectively in position by partially removing an organic EL layer of a light emitting section, while suppressing damage of the organic EL layer, in a method for manufacturing an organic EL element. The method for manufacturing an organic EL element provided with a sealing member includes: a step of forming the organic EL layer in a region, which is above a substrate provided with a substrate and an anode and includes at least a region to be bonded to which the sealing member is to be bonded and also a region inside the region to be bonded; a step of exposing the region to be bonded, by removing at least an organic EL layer portion above the region to be bonded, by irradiating the portion with plasma by using a remote plasma system; a step of completing the organic EL element by forming a cathode on the organic EL layer; and a step of bonding the sealing member onto the exposed region to be bonded.
