A device includes a semiconductor structure comprising a light emitting layer (48) disposed between an n-type region (44, 49) and a p-ty?e region (46). The semiconductor structure is disposed between a window layer (40) and a light-directing structure (44). The light-directing structure is configured to direct light toward the window layer; examples of suitable light- directing structures include a porous semiconductor layer and a photonic crystal. An n-contact (58, 64) is electrically connected to the n-type region and a p-contact (60, 62) is electrically connected to the p- type region. The p-contact is disposed in an opening (54) formed in the semiconductor structure.
