[Also in Group XVI] Apparatus primarily intended for use in a bending process (see Group XVI) may also be used for the buttwelding of longitudinal seams in thermoplastic material. The apparatus comprises a two-part table 3 each part of which is pivotally mounted at 8 and vertically adjustable, hand wheels 9 serving to clamp the table parts in position. A knife 1 is mounted on a beam 2 and projects upwards through a slot formed between the two parts of the table 3. The knife is heated by passing a hot fluid, e.g. steam or diphenyl oxide, through a conduit 11 therein, or may be heated electrically or by a gas burner, and heatinsulating material 12 is interposed between the knife and the beam 2. The pieces of thermoplastic material to be seamed are placed on the two parts of the table 3 respectively and the surfaces to be united are simultaneously pressed one against each side of the knife 1, the cutting edge of which stands above the upper surface of the table. The knife is heated and when the correct temperature is reached the apparatus is adjusted so that the cutting edge of the knife is withdrawn from the slot between the two parts of the table and the surfaces to be welded are pressed together by hand or mechanically. |
