[Also in Group XVI] A manually operable device for recording information as indentations or perforations in a storage medium according to any desired code comprises a coding roller having longitudinal rows of projections on the periphery thereof, each row of projections representing the code to be recorded for a different character, the roller being manually settable to different angular positions and means for bringing the roller and the position on the storage-medium at which a recording is to be made into alignment, wherein after the roller has been set, it is manually displaced towards the storage medium to effect a recording. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the coding roller is contained in a head 5 and is set angularly by means of a rotary selector wheel 7. The head is positioned laterally with respect to a card 2 to be perforated by means of a pawl 12 and rack 13. By depressing a lever 6, the roller is moved into contact with the card to effect punching. The card is printed during the punching operation by means of a type-wheel 9 which is also set angularly by selector wheel 7. After the punching operation, the pawl 12 is released by operating lever 14. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the coding roller is set angularly by means of a keyboard. The coding roller, Fig. 3, comprises a plurality of toothed coding discs 27 mounted on a shaft 31 which has secured thereto a handle 32 having a flange 49 provided with marks co-operable with a stationary datum mark. The roller is connected to a carriage 4 slidably mounted on a bar 11. The coding discs are set angularly by rotation of handle 32 and when the handle is depressed teeth 28 on the discs depress a row of punches 34 to effect punching. The coding roller also comprises a printing wheel 53 and may also comprise a toothed disc 52 which actuates a pin 59 at each punching operation to provide a row of feed holes in the card; alternatively, if the card has been pre-punched with feed holes, the pin 59 then serves as a locating pin. The coding roller also includes a disc 54 engageable with a spring- urged positioning pin 39 which, when the coding head is displaced towards the card, is moved into engagement with one of a row of holes in a linear indexing member before the punches engage the card. The coding head is advanced laterally in incremental steps corresponding to the spacing of the holes in the indexing member. The punches may be dispensed with in which case the teeth 28 on the discs 27 are replaced by projections. |
