Chuck of the type in which the jaws (22) are carried by supports (5) swinging in the body (1) of the chuck about axes perpendicular to a plane passing through the axis (XX) of the body. Each support (5) is designed additionally to carry out a displacement in a direction having a component parallel to the axis of the body, and the operating means (16, 19 to 21) act on the supports (5) both in order to make them pivot and in order to displace them axially so that the piece is both clamped between the jaws and pushed by them against an axial stop piece (25) carried by the body. Preferably, retaining members, such as springs (13), are located so that the clamping of the piece takes place before it is pressed against the axial stop piece. <IMAGE>
