The apparatus consists of a source (12) of a liquid anaesthetic and an injection needle (28) which is connected to the source. A control system (20, 22) expels the liquid from the source (12) through the needle according to signals from a data processor. The control system includes a means (18) for monitoring the penetration of a vein or artery, producing a relaxation in pressure on the liquid source to allow sufficient suction to show a reflux of blood.
