Preparing an unsaturated ester catalyst comprises: (a) impregnating a catalyst carrier with water-soluble palladium and gold compounds; (b) fixing the water-soluble palladium compound and the water-soluble gold compound to the carrier by forming water-insoluble palladium and gold compounds using an alkali metal borate solution; and (c) reducing the water-insoluble palladium and gold compounds to the metals.
