The screen or shutter consists of a series of adjoining transverse slats (1) that retract into and deploy from an overhead magazine. The ends of the slats are fitted with grooved profiles (8) that arev able to slide relative to one another and have toothed edges engaging with a driven gear to form a rack and pinion drive mechanism. Turning in one direction the drive deploys the slats so they extend vertically; in the other direction they are retracted into the magazine.
