The process, carried out in four stages, comprises identifying the spectral response of each pollutant, using a pulsed laser beam from a neodymium YAG or titanium-sapphire laser (11) with a frequency doubler (121) and tripler (122) as an excitation source, sampling the fluorescence signal emitted by the medium using an optical system, and passing the signal to the input of a spectro-fluorimeter (9) connected to a multi-channel detector such as a high resolution camera with a high scanning speed, and a computer (30) with a compatible interface. The final stage consists of processing the computer-generated image to give a three-dimensional image from which results can be interpreted.
