PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable multi-stage triggering which is smoother than a known conventional reactor starter. SOLUTION: The starter with a variable reactor circuit comprises a primary winding connected to the power source terminal of a motor, a power source switch connected series to the power source wide of the primary winding, a secondary winding wound on the iron core shared with the primary winding, a tertiary winding with an intermediate tap, and a variable reactor circuit consisting of a tap selecting device. It otherwise comprises a primary winding provided with an intermediate tap connected to the power source terminal of a motor, a power source switch and a ground switch provided on the ground side and the power source side of the primary winding, a secondary winding wound on the iron core shared with the primary winding, a tertiary winding with an intermediate tap, and a variable reactor circuit consisting of a tap selecting device.
