A base for an artificial skating rink has either its top surface of both its top and bottom surfaces roughened. The base is composed of connected to form a large panel and the whole lies on a supporting base. Between the base and the supporting base there is a buffer layer of elastic matl. The base is composed of plates that are made of a polyolefin esp. ultra-high molecular polyethylene. The roughness of the surface(s) is such that a user's skates or the supporting base actually contact only a small portion of the surface(s). Easy installation enables the resulting skating rink to be produced at low cost. Low tendency to crack formation and shrinkage caused by temp. changes ensures low maintenance and running costs. Can be disassembled and reinstalled in other locations as required.
