Acoustic sonde (12) for down hole well logging operations has housing with an acoustically transparent section (16) defining an internal chamber in which an annular acoustic transducer array (44) is located adjacent the transparent housing section. It has an annular backing element (92) composed of acoustically attenuating material, acoustic transducer elements located externally of the element, and electronic transducer circuits (98) individually electrically coupled to the elements, electronic transmitting/receiving circuitry (62) being coupled in controlling relation with the circuits. Also claimed is a method of mfg. a piezo-electric acoustic array by assembling a tubular acoustic attenuating backing (92) and tubular piezo-electric body (94) adhered to one another, the piezo-electric body defining the outer periphery of the assembly, and making cuts through the body to divide it into spaced piezo-electric transducers, electrically isolated from one another and located peripherally about and supported by the tubular acoustic attenuating backing.
