Control of sucking lice

The invention describes the use of a microbial preparation of one or more bacteria, for example of the genus Bacillus in the manufacture of a formulation as a medicament for the treatment and prevention of infestation of sucking lice from the order Phthiraptera, Anoplura, Rhynchophthirina and/or Pediculidae. The medicament can be applied to plumage, pelage or hair to control sucking lice.

1. A composition for killing human sucking lice of an order Phthiraptera and a sub order of either Anoplura or Rhynchophthirina and/or their eggs comprising:
a liquid microbial preparation derived from a bacterium of the genus Bacillus including a combination of the bacterium cells, and cell components, the cell components comprising proteins, spores, membranes, membrane-bound proteins, membrane-enzymes and membrane-bound metabolites, and free pathogenic metabolites thereof, wherein the microbial preparation is prepared without an acetone drying step; wherein the membrane-bound proteins, membrane-enzymes or membrane-bound metabolites of a bacterium of the genus Bacillus or a combination thereof are present in an amount effective to kill the human sucking lice and/or their eggs; and a carrier for topical application, wherein the Bacillus bacterium is not a thuringiensin producing bacterium.
