PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to bring a document into close contact with a contact glass irrespective of tolerance or deformation of a document cover and a document mat.SOLUTION: An image reading device 2 comprises a contact glass 11 that has a document D mounted on its top face; a document cover 20 that is rotatably installed to enable surface contact with the contact glass 11; a white document mat 21 that is provided on the rear side of the document cover 20, can be in surface contact with the contact glass 11, and directly presses the document D; and a close contact-type image reading part 110 that illuminates the document D from below the contact glass 11, moves in the sub scanning direction with respect to the document D, and reads an image of the document D.
