Electronic load cell - with deformable gallium phosphide monocrystal between light emitting diode, polarizer/analyzer filters and photodiode

A load cell contains a plate of GaP as the sensitive element; it is arranged between the polariser filter and the analyser filter of a light-emitting diode. The light from the latter is received at the opposite side of the assembly by a photodiode which feeds an amplifier and a phase-controlled rectifier to produce an output signal proportional to the load applied. This load cell has a very good sensitivity. It supplies a high signal voltage without undue amplification.
