PURPOSE: An audio on demand method and system are provided to listen to the audio, which the user purchased, with the mobile terminal, which has limited memory whenever and wherever the user wants to listen. CONSTITUTION: The system consists of a WAP server(180), an audio source server(140), a service management server(130) and an audio encoding server(190). The mobile terminals(100, 101, 102) can be cellular phones, PDAs and wireless data communication computer. The terminal downloads MP3, WMA or AAC files using networks and saves them in the memory. The terminal has the decoding module and the audio output circuit. The terminal can play the streaming audio and download continuously after connection is recovered. The terminal has LCD or output part, which can display the status of the device or the selected data. The audio source server stores and manages many audio files and consists of the audio source management server and a digital audio service storage server. The service management server gets the selection command from the terminal and sends it to the audio source server and the audio source management server retrieves the audio source index. The digital audio source storage server retrieves the audio source and sends it to the terminal. The service management server charges for the audio source to the user. The billing can be done with an extra payment gateway. The system management server(170) manages the whole system and collect statistics of the downloads or streaming transmissions. The audio source encoding server adds new audio source to the audio source server after encoding the audio. The servers can be separated or unified on a few machines as processes or threads.
