The main shaft of the alternator carries a core section (4c) with outer peripheral recesses in which are secured inward-turned flanges (4f,g) formed at the centre of metal end cheeks (8a,8b). Each cheek is cut in petal shapes corresponding to the pitch of the alternator rotor "claws", and each petal incorporates a securing tag (8c) on one edge, bent at right angles. The inductor winding (4d) of the machine is laid directly on the core (4c) between the cheeks (8a,8b). Lead-out wires (4e) pass through plastic ferrules (8d) clipped into these cheeks and are secured to the machine's slip rings, carried on one end of its shaft, in the usual way. On assembly, the "claw" elements forming the rotor are brought together to embrace the end cheeks (8a,8b). The tags (8c) on each petal edge then distort to follow each claw's profile, so locking inductor winding and rotor iron firmly together as one unit.
