The use of Re cpds. of formula ReaObXcLd (I) as catalyst for oxidn. of electron-rich aromatic cpds. and their derivs. is claimed. X = F, Cl, Br, I or OH; L = Lewis base; a = 1, 2 or 3; b = 0 or 2-9; c = 0 or 1-9; d = 0 or 1-4; a + b + c = values corresp. to zero- or di- to hepta-valent Re provided that, if b is not 0, b = at least 2a. Oxidn. is carried out in an organic solvent in the presence of a peroxide cpd., pref. H2O2. Also claimed is a method for oxidising 6-22C aryl cpds. and derivs. in the presence of (I; b = 0 or 2-7).
