The injection path formation occurs in an internal combustion engine. It has a crankcase, crankshaft, piston, connecting rod and cylinder to which fuel is supplied by an injection system including a supply pump acted on by a cam on a camshaft via a pushrod with a roller. The injection cam (6) can be adjusted relative to the camshaft (19). The camshaft carries at least one injection cam, which can be adjusted independently of the gas exchange cams. The injection cam has a steep flank region (20), a transition region (21) and an arc-of circle region (22).
