The device has a magnetic element (8) on a movable object (2), which generates a magnetic field, and a first sensor (14), which responds to a magnetic field component parallel to the direction of motion. A second sensor (15) responds to a magnetic field component perpendicular to the direction of motion. The sensor outputs are connected to threshold switches, which are changed to the connected state when the sensor signals exceed respective threshold levels. The threshold switches are connected to an evaluation circuit, which generates a position recognition signal when both threshold switches are connected.
