PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic polyimide precursor excellent in preservation stability at a room temperature and adhesive property on imide formation. SOLUTION: This method for producing an aromatic polyimide precursor obtained by polymerizing 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene with a monomer containing 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid anhydride, is provided by (1) setting the reaction temperature at >=35 deg.C and <=80 deg.C, (2) using an organic solvent containing <=1,000 ppm water content, and (3) setting 0.90-1.00 molar fraction of 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid anhydride based on 1,3-bis(3- aminophenoxy)benzene.
