PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly hold electric insulation property between a lower shield layer and the electrode layer of a magnetic resistance effect element and to provide a stable reproduction characteristic by forming an insulating layer between the electrode layer and the lower shield layer in addition to a lower gap layer with respect to a thin film magnetic head. SOLUTION: An insulating layer 28 is formed on a lower shield layer 20 with prescribed extension. The electrode layer 25 of a magnetic resistance effect element 22 is formed on the insulating layer 28 through a lower gap layer 21. The insulating layer 28 is not formed below a multilayer film 23. It is preferable to arrange the insulating layers 28 on both sides of a multilayer film 23 or both sides of reproduction track width RTw. Thus, the lower gap length GL1 of the range of reproduction track width RTw can be reduced, correspondence to high density recording is realized, insulation property in a range except reproduction track width RTw is improved and the occurrence of smearing can be suppressed with such arrangement. |
