PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure high image formation efficiency. SOLUTION: A copying machine 100 is provided with: a document carrying device 10 which is provided with a pair of carrying-in rolls 16 and a pair of ejecting rolls 20 arranged on a document carrying line 12 and an electric motor M for driving the pair of carrying-in rolls 16 and the pair of ejecting rolls 20; a contact type image sensor 104; and a controller 30. The controller 30 drives the electric motor M so that a document is ejected to the downstream side of the document carrying line 12 at the time of discriminating that the length of the document is equal to or longer than a prescribed length and so that the document is returned to the upstream side of the document carrying line 12 at the time of discriminating that the length of the document is shorter than the prescribed length.
