Acoustically absorptive carpeting includes a primary layer (12) of fibrous material with yarn tufts (14) extending outwardly therefrom and a secondary layer (16) of thermoplastic material that forms a carpet backing (18). The carpet backing (18) is rendered porous. A substrate (22) of porous material is attached to the carpet backing (18). The substrate includes a layer of fine fibrous material (24) attached to a layer of coarse fibrous material (26). The layers of fine and coarse fibrous material each have respective different acoustic impedances. The layers of dine and coarse fibrous material (24, 26) each have a respective different acoustic impedances. The layer of coarse fibrous material has fibers in an open, loose configuration. The carpet backing (18) is bonded to the layer of coarse fibrous material with a thermoplastic adhesive material (30) such that the thermoplastic adhesive material encapsulates individual fibers (32) of the layer of coarse fibrous material (26) without extending therebetween.
