PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dual-compartment bioreactor for use in wastewater treatment and algal production.SOLUTION: A dual compartment bioreactor system 100 comprises: a first compartment 112 containing heterotrophic organisms; a second compartment 122 containing autotrophic organisms; and a membrane subsystem 110 in operational contact with the first compartment and the second compartment; wherein the membrane subsystem 110 is configured to permit transport of at least one of gases and solutes from the first compartment 112 to the second compartment 122 and from the second compartment 122 to the first compartment 112.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
