PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a process for synthesizing high quality carbon single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs).SOLUTION: There is provided a method for synthesizing high quality carbon single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) including contacting a carbon precursor gas at reduced concentration (pressure) with a catalyst which is deposited atop a carrier and has a temperature approximately 10°C higher than the SWNT synthesis onset temperature but lower than the pyrolysis temperature of the carbon precursor gas for given growth conditions. The concentration (pressure) of the carbon precursor gas can be controlled by reducing the total gas pressure or by diluting the gas with an inert carrier gas or by enforcing both. The SWNTs are manufactured in a state where the pressure of the carbon precursor gas is being confined to 5-200 Torr and where the ratio of the G band to the D band on a Raman spectrum is high.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
