PURPOSE: A composition containing an effective amount of β-turmerone separated from Zedoariae Rhizoma is provided. Because the β-turmerone inhibits COX-2(cyclooxygenase-2) and iNOS(inducible nitric oxide synthase) activity, the composition containing the same can be effectively used as a composition for prevention of cancer or an antiinflammatory composition. CONSTITUTION: Zedoariae Rhizoma is extracted in water or alcohol and then the extract is subjected to silica gel column chromatography. The extract contains β-turmerone of the formula 1. For example, 600g Zedoariae Rhizoma is extracted in 100% methanol three times every 3hr, concentrated under reduced pressure to produce 28.55g extract, which is dispersed in distilled water, extracted in methylene chloride, ethylacetate and n-butanol.
