1,246,897. Ammoxidation process. LUMMUS CO. 2 Dec., 1969 [9 Dec., 1968], No. 58852/69. Heading C2C. Nitriles are produced by contacting hydrocarbons, which are either C 2-18 alkanes or alkenes or C 1-4 -alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, with ammonia and a melt containing either (a) a halide of a metal having more than one positive valence state in both its higher and lower valence state; or (b) a halide of a metal having more than one positive valence state in both its higher and lower valence state and the corresponding oxyhalide of the metal and when the melt is (a), the contacting is further effected in the presence of an oxygencontaining gas. Specified metals are manganese, cobalt, chromium, copper and iron. The melt may also contain a univalent-metal halide which is non-volatile and resistant to the action of oxygen under the reaction conditions, e.g. an alkali-metal chloride, and/or a promotor comprising a chloride of antimony, bismuth, arsenic, molybdenum, manganese or uranium. |
