Modified and stabilised cis-1,4-polyisoprene is prepd. by (a) polymerising isoprene in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst; (b) deactivating or passivating the catalyst; (c) modifying and stabilising the polymer; and (d) degassing and drying the polymer at 100 degrees-250 degrees C. The modification and stabilising agent is 4-nitrosodiphenylamine (I) and is used in an amt. of 0.05-1% w.r.t. polymer. (I) is added to polymer at the end of the polymerisation process. The polyisoprene has properties similar and in some cases better than natural rubber. It has good storage stability high tension at 300% deformation and excellent elasticity, fatigue and elastic hysteresis values and high adhesion characteristics. Unvulcanised, carbon black contg. polyisoprene have high cohesion adhesion and workability (I) has a stabilising effect similar to p-phenylenediamines. The polyisoprene may be used in tyres, shoes, cable, sheaths, etc. |
