Shock absorber with load-dependent damping control for vehicles

In a shock absorber it is intended to achieve a load-dependent control of its damping force for a low technical cost. To this end a flow passage, connecting two cylinder chambers to one another and in which a control slide valve influencing a restrictor cross-section is situated, is provided in the piston rod. The said control slide valve is equipped with a step piston, both piston sections of which are acted upon by damping fluid, that piston section having the smaller diameter being adjacent to a return spring, which endeavours to maintain the control slide valve in a position keeping the flow passage open. If the pressure in the damping fluid increases due to an increasing wheel load, this causes the control slide valve to reduce the passage cross-section as a function of the load in order to increase the damping force. The admission of damping fluid to both piston sections of the step piston makes sealing off of its guide from the atmosphere unnecessary.
