Apparatus for cooling a drawn light-conducting fibre (5) comprises a hollow body which can be opened up by rotating two halves (11,12) about hinge (13). This body is in turn surrounded by a cooling body (6) whose diameter is sufficiently large to enable the halves of the internal body to open up. The cooling body (6) has its internal surface as near to the fibre as possible whilst ensures that the internal body can be freely opened. The cooling body is thermally insulated from the outside and has a double wall through which coolant can run. The area between the inner and outer bodies can be filled with coolant gas. ADVANTAGE - The internal body allows the passage of the initial drawing bulb (10) in its open position and can then be closed to protect the fibre from contamination during cooling.
