A load restraint system comprises an elongate element (5) such as a strap, one end of the element being connected to retractor mechanism (4) comprising a spring-biassed spool, the strap being associated with respective means (10, 12) to connect two parts of the strap to respective anchoring points, means (8) being provided to retain tension in that portion of the strap which extends between the two parts. When not in use, the strap may be withdrawn into the retractor mechanism. When in use, the tension in the strap may maintain a load securely in position.
