PURPOSE: A scroll compressor having clearance for an Oldham coupling is provided to reduce noise and overload by fitting the key of the Oldham coupling into the slot tightly and permitting deflection of the key with forming the taper or stepped surface including clearance between the key and the slot. CONSTITUTION: A scroll compressor(10) has a pair of engaged scrolls(56,70). An Oldham coupling(68) is attached to the orbiting scroll to prevent rotation of the orbiting scroll. The Oldham coupling has keys that are received in slots with sliding. One side of each key is loaded while the opposite side is non-loaded. The non-loaded side of the key has a stepped or profiled surface to provide clearance to allow deflection of the key. The stepped or profiled surface is provided on the non-loaded side of the slot. The key of the Oldham coupling is fitted to the slot tightly, and deflection of the key is provided by forming the taper or stepped surface including the clearance between the key and the slot.
