There is described a method of browser-server communication in a communicati on system (10, 120) comprising microbrowser software (40), microserver software (SO) a nd a remote server (170). The microbrowser software (40) is operable to transmit request s for at least one of content and executable software via HTTP channels (85, 100, 1510) to one or more of the microserver software (50) and the remote server (170), and to receive one or more of the content and executable software back from one or more of the mic:roserver software (50) and the remote server (170) via the HTTP channels (85, 100, 150). The method further including the steps of: (1) identifying at one or more of the microserver software (50) and the remo te server (170) availability of at least one of supplementary content and executable software and issuing corresponding notifying instructions therefrom via private communication channels (90, 160) to the microbrowser software (40); (2) notifying existence via the browser software (40) of at least one of the supplementary content and the executable software to the user, and transmitting getting instructions from the browser software (40) to one or more of the microserver software (5 0) and the remote server (170); (3) receiving the getting instructions at one or more of the microserversoft ware (50) and the remote server (170), and transmitting at least one of the supplementary content and executable software therefrom to the microbrowser software (40). The method is of advantage in that the microbrowser software (40) can be informed of at least one of the supplementary content and executable software from ones or more of the server (170) or the microserver software (50) in the context of the system (10, 120) being HTTP-based.
