PURPOSE: An oral hygiene composition containing an Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. extract or a mixture thereof as an effective ingredient is provided which eliminates bad breath and has an excellent prophylactic and treating effect on periodontal gum disease while providing freshness. CONSTITUTION: Flowers of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. are dried, ground, extracted with water or an organic solvent, followed by filtering or centrifugal separation to remove impurities. The oral hygiene composition contains 0.05 to 5% by weight of the Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. extract. For example, 1% by weight of the Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. extract is mixed with 0.02% by weight of sodium fluoride, 12% by weight of ethanol, 0.5% by weight of sodium saccharide, 8% by weight of glycerin, 30% by weight of polydimethylsiloxane, 0.04% by weight of an emulsion and a suitable amount of a mandarin skin extract.
