PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coloring matter suitable for preparing a water-based liquid for ink jet. SOLUTION: The water-soluble azo metal chelate coloring matter for ink jet recording is formed from an azo compound represented by formula (I) (wherein formula (II) is a 5 to 7-membered heterocyclic ring, which may bear a substituent group or form a condensed ring; Y1 is an -NHCOH group or an -NHSO2 R group; Z1 is an arbitrary substituent group; a is an integer of 0-4; and the azo compound bears a hydrophilic group) and a metal.
