PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyphenol useful as an electroconductive material or antioxidant by specifying the ratio for the extinction peak areas corresponding to each specific wavelength. SOLUTION: This polyphenol is such one as to be >=10 in the ratio A/B (A is the extinction peak area at wavelengths 960-986 cm-1, and B is the extinction peak area at wavelengths 996-1,018 cm-1 in the infrared absorption spectrum). This polyphenol is obtained, preferably by the following procedure: horseradish peroxidase dissolved in e.g. a phosphate buffer solution at pH 7 is dissolved in phenol dissolved in methanol followed by dripping 30 wt.% hydrogen peroxide to the resultant solution at a rate of 0.25 mL/h for 5 h and then agitation to carry out a polymerization of the phenol.
