PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a CCD for sensing opening/closing of an original cover in addition to reading of an original. SOLUTION: An actuator 13 is in interlocking with an original cover 15, the actuator 13 shuts an optical path for a light corresponding to excess bits not used for image reading and at a side of a CCD 2a when the original cover 15 is closed. The actuator 13 opens the optical path for the light corresponding to the excess bits not used for image reading and at the side of the CCD 2a when the original cover 15 is open. A system control section monitors an output level of the excess bit part of the CCD 2a on the basis of an output signal from a CCD output signal processing section of a scanner 2, recognizes that the original cover 15 is open when the output level is a preset output voltage or over and allows an LCD display section of an operation section 4 to display the fact.
