PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control brightness of backlight, in which the addition of circuits and power consumption are suppressed. SOLUTION: A timing control part divides the RGB grayscale levels of an image into at least three or more levels (S100). The numbers, contained in the divided levels of respective data extracted from a video of R, G, and B applied from the outside, are counted and compared with each other, on the basis of one video frame (S200, S300, S400). A voltage applied to a backlight drive part is adjusted, in response to the comparison, and the timing control part adjusts the brightness level by units of one video frame. The timing control part increases the brightness of backlight in the case of a screen, in which a high grayscale concentrates locally (or a screen, for which high contrast is demanded), or a screen which has a high grayscaly as a whole (or screen which demands high brightness). Otherwise, the timing control part always maintains brightness to the normal level (S210, S320, S410, S510).
