PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device wherein recording time of image data in a recording medium can be reduced. SOLUTION: In an ASIC 7 arranged in an electronic camera, either fixed length compression or non-fixed length compression wherein compression is performed without fixing the length, of image data is enabled selectively. In the case that the number of frames which can be recorded in a memory card 9 and is calculated on the basis of residual capacity of the memory card 9 is larger than the number of frames which can be accommodated in a buffer memory 8, image data are compressed by using the non-fixed length compression and then recorded in the memory card 9. In the case that the number of frames which can be recorded in the memory card 9 is at most the number of frames which can be accommodated in the buffer memory 8, the image data are compressed by using for fixed length compression and recorded in the memory card 9. As a result, in the case that compression is performed by using the non-fixed length compression, recording time of the image data in the memory card 9 can be reduced as compared with the conventional case. |
